Nestled in the stunning rock pinnacles, City of Rocks State Park in Faywood, NM offers cool trails that lead directly from the campgrounds into the rocks. Although full-hookup sites are located off on a paved area, the dry camping sites are located right in the middle of the rocks and offer level gravel spots with electric and covered tables. The park is very quiet and clean, and there are reserved spots available for hookups. Most sites are well-spaced, making the campground feel not too crowded. The park also offers several trails, and while many are rather easy, Table Mountain trail can get quite challenging. The view of the campground and surrounding area from Table Mountain, however, is breathtaking. The park also has surprisingly level campsites with scattered picnic tables and trash cans. And for those who want to explore the area beyond the park, there is a winery with tastings, La Esperanza, just 20 miles away.
From The Campground
City of Rocks State Park is a one square mile area in the scenic Chihuahuan desert region of southwestern New Mexico at an elevation of 5,200 feet. The park features large, sculptured rock columns rising as high as 40 feet and separated by paths resembling city streets. These rocks were formed about 34.9 million years ago when a very large volcano erupted. The park offers camp sites, hiking trails, mountain biking, wildlife viewing, birding, stargazing, picnic areas, and a desert botanical garden. The uniquely designed, new Visitor Center includes a large display area and modern restrooms with hot showers.
