What others are saying about this campground
The terrain is high desert with lots of cacti, yucca and sagebrush. The views of the surrounding mountains and desert are stunning. A great spot to stay the night and enjoy the beautiful sunsets. This campground is located in the high desert terrain of Grants, New Mexico, about a 15 minute drive from the nearest town. It is easy to access from the road and has 10 free campsites. Each site is equipped with a metal pavilion, picnic table, firepit, and cooking pit, and is amply spaced from the other sites. Vault toilets are available, and the landscape is beautiful, with cacti, yucca, sagebrush, and stunning views of the surrounding mountains. Sunsets are breathtaking, and the moon is so bright that a flashlight isnt necessary for the bathroom. Dogs are welcome, but need to be watched around the cacti. The sites are mostly level, but a 30 RV might be the max due to the uneven ground. It is best to arrive before 5pm to ensure a spot, as this area can fill up quickly, especially near the weekends.

From The Campground
Joe Skeen Campground is a free, first-come, first-served campground located in the El Malpais National Conservation Area in Grants, New Mexico. The campground has 10 campsites, each with a covered picnic table, fire grill, and tent space. Restrooms are available on site. The campground is open year-round and has no camping fees. The maximum stay is 7 days per month. The campground is set back from the highway and has pull-through parking ideal for total lengths up to 50 feet. Visitors should be cautious during the monsoon season due to unpredictable weather and flash flooding. Any outing in El Malpais should include daypacks with water, snacks, rain gear, a first aid kit, and sunscreen. Visitors planning on hiking the lava terrain will need sturdy hiking boots. Trails can be uneven, steep and even icy in the winter. Exploring BLM lava tube caves requires being prepared with warm clothing, protective headgear, three sources of light, and leather gloves. To go caving in the national monument, you must have the appropriate gear and a free caving permit.
