What others are saying about this campground
Heron Lake State Park is a great park for those who enjoy peace and quiet. It is spacious with well-spread out campsites that are large and not too close to each other. The park is well managed and the spaces are well thought out. The elevation here is about 7,000, so its important to take that into consideration if you have breathing problems. While the park lacks a view of the lake or mountains in the distance, it makes up for it with a good trail system to walk dogs and a dump station on the way out. The bathrooms are cleaned almost daily, and though there may be no soap, the showers are decent with new ones, good pressure and warm water. The lack of water may be a drawback, but the 30 amp electrical hookups worked well. Its important to note that there is a weak Verizon data signal, but its just enough to post online. Despite the lack of direct access to the lake, people still swim and kayak, and the park is clean and well taken care of. Its a great value for the price and worth the journey, even if its off the beaten path.

From The Campground

Heron Lake State Park is a picturesque lake set among the tall pines of northern New Mexico. It has been designated a “quiet lake” where boats operate at no-wake speeds only, making it an excellent location for all types of paddle craft. Heron Lake also has amazing sailing, cross-country skiing, and hiking. The park is a fisherperson’s paradise with record-size trout and kokanee salmon. Wildlife viewing opportunities abound at Heron Lake, where you may see the elusive mountain lion, black bear, elk, deer, marmot, bald eagles, and osprey. Several campgrounds line the shore of this scenic lake with primitive and developed campsites available for every taste.
