GenieSummary

This campground in Santa Fe, New Mexico is a beautiful and secluded spot with plenty of campsites and lots of shade. It is conveniently located to Santa Fe amenities and is a great spot for some free camping on your way to/from Gila Cliff Dwellings Natl Monument. The water spigot only worked intermittently, and it was difficult to get a site due to online reservations, some of which werent even used but sites were still considered occupied due to reservation. Pit toilets were minimally smelly and relatively clean. The campground is located off a forest service road that gets pretty rough, so it is recommended to have 4 wheel drive, motorcycle, or ATV. The area is quiet and peaceful, with a nice little mountain stream running through it. It can get cool at night, even in August, due to the elevation, making it a great spot for camping in a tent. There are many birds in the area, and the sounds of a running stream is peaceful. Due to the Gila can being plagued with wildfires, no campfires are currently permitted except for in designated metal fire pits maintained by the forest service.

From The Campground

Sapillo Campground is an undeveloped campground located in Gila National Forest, under ponderosa pine trees. It is a favorite of group campers and offers numerous dispersed camping sites. Hiking is available along the Continental Divide Trail. There is no fee for this campground and no firewood available. Please bring your own if you plan on building a fire. The convenience store in Mimbres is approximately 15 miles south and approximately five (5) miles north of the Lake Roberts General Store. Fishing at Lake Roberts two (2) miles north.
