The Catskill Mountains campground is the perfect spot for a weekend of hiking and exploring nature. Located near Woodstock, NY, the campground is situated near the Big Indian Wilderness and Sundown Wild Forest, making it a great spot for outdoor activities. The campground itself has everything you need, including public toilets, showers, public phone, picnic tables, grills, firewood (for sale), and a dump station. The campsites are creekside and quiet, and the access to Woodland Valley Stream provides a great relief from the heat. The campground is well-maintained and there are good trails directly out of the campground, including the Slide Mountain and Giant Ledge trails. Unfortunately, cell service is limited, but the night time ranger is sweet as pie and the facilities are in good shape. The campsites are on the smaller side and about half are fairly private, and there is a strong possibility of encountering black bears in the area. Make sure to bring extra bug spray and a fishing permit with your fly rod, and plan in advance as the campground gets booked up in the summer. Enjoy the babbling brook near your campsite, the stunning view of the Catskills, and the sound of nature singing a lullaby as you fall asleep.
From The Campground
Woodland Valley Campground & Day Use Area is a historic campground located in the Catskills region of New York. The area was clear cut in the late 1800s and was used for tanning industries. The land was left for taxes and taken over by the state in 1902. Over the next 25 years, it became a popular camping and hiking area. The cabin and other original buildings were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the early 1930s, making this one of the earliest campgrounds. Two main trails come through the campground, making it popular with hikers. Panther Mountain, which is outlined by the Esopus Creek and Woodland Valley Stream, is the impact site of a meteorite that hit 350 million years ago. The campground offers a Junior Naturalist Program for young children and their families to enjoy games and activities to earn a beautiful embroidered patch.
