GenieSummary
There are two beaches, several hiking trails that range in difficulty, points of interest (ex-thunder rocks is a must see), two camp stores, a museum, gift shop and restaurants. The kayaks and small water craft rentals are a little pricy. The campsites are a little too closely spaced, and no one enforces quiet hours. Poor, to no cell phone reception in the Quaker Area adds to the remoteness. Allegany State Park is a great place to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. With rustic cabins, two beaches, several hiking trails, two camp stores, a museum, gift shop and restaurants, there is something for everyone to enjoy. The trees offer great shade and privacy between most sites, and the kayaks and small water craft rentals are a great way to explore the lake. Unfortunately, the campground suffers from long term neglect, with pealing paint in the showers and restrooms, and maps not detailed enough to find water spigots. There is also no enforcement of quiet hours, so be prepared for some noise at night. However, this is a great place to get away and enjoy nature.
From The Campground
Allegany State Park is Western New York's natural playground. It is open year-round and offers 65,000 acres of mature forest, open fields, three lakes plus access to the Kinzua Reservoir and abundant wildlife. The park is divided into two sections: Red House Area, the Regional Headquarters, and Quaker Run. Hiking, fishing, camping, boating/kayaking, snowmobiling, X-country skiing and wildlife viewing makes this the premier, year-round place to experience nature up close.
