Jernimans Campground is a small, basic campground located on Ocracoke Island, just behind a gas station. The campground has recently changed ownership and the new owners are working hard to make improvements and create the perfect island camping experience. There are a lot of permanent trailers there due to the DOT Ferry employees living there while their dorms are rebuilt. The campground is located such that you can walk to any part of town, with a small grocery/hardware adjacent to it. There are 3 choices for RV camping on the island - The 2 private campgrounds including this one are close to or in town, can be challenging to maneuver thru, and in high demand during summer season. The campground offers easy access to town and a general store/grocery store, and most important, adult beverages. Renting a golf cart or biking around town is the easiest way to get around. The campground also offers newer, clean golf cart rentals on site, and theyre working on the main building to have a restaurant and camp store. The campground is small and at the time of our visit was rented mostly to ferry workers. The bugs were not too bad until the last night but I hadnt sprayed around our area for a few days. There is a nice fence with places to put up a line for wet towels, etc. The campground is a work in progress and the owners are clearly up to the task and they have already accomplished a great deal.
