Bear Island is the perfect place for a beach camping adventure. Its a secluded island accessible by ferry or kayak, with eleven individual and two group sites located in the dunes. The sites are reasonably priced and include one ferry round trip per day as part of your camping fee. The sites are well spaced and you wont feel on top of one another. There are showers and potable water on the island, however, shade is hard to come by so you might want to bring a shade tent/tarp for some reprieve. Be advised, there are no campfires allowed on the island (not even below the high tide line) so plan accordingly. There are a fair number of snakes out and about so if youve got a pooch with you, exercise caution. You can also canoe/kayak out to Bear Island from the main land if you have the time, experience and the conditions are right. Note that although it is dog-friendly, you cant bring dogs on the ferry. If youre looking for beautiful beach camping that isnt super crowded, then Bear Island is the place to be!

The park staff leads regularly scheduled interpretive programs that allow the public to gain perspective into what makes North Carolina state parks naturally wonderful. The park is a great place for hosting special occasions like birthday parties, reunions, weddings, and more. The Friends of the Hammocks and Bear Island promotes, supports, and advocates for Hammocks Beach State Park through organizing volunteer efforts, educating visitors, hosting events, and fundraising.
