GenieSummary
The night skies are dark here and we had absolute quiet here except during the thunderstorms. The City of Hazen Campground is the perfect place to stay for those looking to explore the south side of Lake Sakakawea. Located 14 miles north of Hazen, the campground is situated in a scenic location with a beautiful view of the bay. All spots are by online reservation only and fill up quickly once the schedule opens in March. The campground offers large grass sites with plenty of room for boat, camper, and vehicle, as well as water and electricity. There are two main areas for non-seasonals: up on a ridge with views of the lake, or down into a more sheltered lower area with no views but more trees and playgrounds for the kids. There is a convenience store, bathrooms, and an office, as well as a wifi router broadcasting its SSID, although internet service is often spotty. There is a bounty of recreational opportunity here including boating, fishing, swimming, hiking and birding, and the night skies are dark and quiet.
From The Campground
Burning Coal Vein Campground is the southernmost campground and trailhead along the 146 mile Maah Daah Hey Trail. This remote campground offers visitors solitude, privacy, and scenic views of the surrounding badlands, columnar juniper and ponderosa pine forest. Campground amenities include: one vault toilet, hand pump with potable water, picnic tables, fire rings, and shaded gravel camping pads. Campsites are spacious and spread out. This campground operates under a Pack-it-In-Pack-it-Out policy.
