Steens Mountain Wilderness Resort is a beautiful, rustic campground located near Frenchglen, Oregon, right by the Malheur Wildlife Refuge. The campground has long, mostly level, gravel sites that work fine but there are several trees that need trimming to avoid larger/taller RV interference. The park has a clean and well-maintained bathroom and shower area. The laundry offers two washers and two dryers at $2 per load. Though there is no specific dog area available, there are adequate opportunities around the perimeter of the campground. While its a good location to visit Steens Mountain, the wildlife refuge, and Alvord Desert, make sure your expectations are in line with reality. The cost is reasonable, but there are no significant amenities, and the French Glen Hotel and general store are closed, so the nearest provisions and restaurant are forty miles north on Highway 205. Lastly, the 3.2-mile gravel road leading to the campground from the highway is a bit rough and bumpy, but slow travel minimizes the discomfort.

Steens Mountain Wilderness Resort is a year-round resort located on 16 acres in the heart of the Oregon Outback. The resort offers lodging, full-service RV sites, and tent sites with clean restrooms. There are 9 different rental units available on a nightly or weekly basis, ranging from modest cabins to a 2 bedroom, 2 bath homestead. The resort is open to group functions and is a popular destination for bird watchers and astronomy clubs. The resort is known for one of the darkest skies in the U.S. All overnight guests have access to free Wi-Fi, DVD library, restrooms, laundry facilities, and a small general store that carries snacks and drinks, RV supplies, firewood, and hunting and fishing licenses.
