What others are saying about this campground
John Day State Park is a beautiful campground located in the high desert of Oregon. It is situated approximately five miles west of the town of John Day on US-26 / US-395 and offers a lush oasis in the barren landscape. The campground has 31 sites, all of which have electric and water hookups. There are also 3 individual shower rooms located at the opposite end of the rest rooms. The sites are very well spaced with some privacy in the form of Oregon Grape hedges and lots of mature trees and kept green by constant irrigation. The roads and RV pads are paved and the sites are grassy and surrounded by bushes that make it feel very private. The park is very quiet during the day due to relatively little traffic and silent at night. It is also close to John Day Fossil Beds National Monument and the Kam Wah Chung State Heritage Site. The campground is first come first served, so arrive early in day for best chance of getting a spot. The fee is $0.00 based upon Oregon State Park Ten Free Nights for disable vets and active duty military. If the campground had full hook-up, it would receive a 5 star rating.

From The Campground

Clyde Holliday State Recreation Site is an oasis along the sparkling John Day River and a base camp for exploring the Strawberry Mountain Wilderness and the region's many historical sites. The park features a year-round picnic area and a small seasonal campground with two tepees available for rent. The park's tall, willowy cottonwood trees provide shade and serenity. Surrounded on all sides by some of Oregon's most pristine wilderness areas, the park is home to a variety of wildlife, including the majestic Rocky Mountain elk and mule deer. Fall visitors can experience the thrill of seeing steelhead rush upriver to spawn. A nature trail begins near the tepee parking area and follows the tree-shaded riverbank, leading to a small pond perfect for wildlife viewing.
