What others are saying about this campground
Vault toilets are the only facilities. Priest Hole is a beautiful and remote campground on the banks of the John Day River in Central Oregon. With no set camp sites, visitors can drive up and pick a spot on the river to enjoy the gorgeous view. It is open year round and is not heavily populated, making it a great spot for a quiet getaway. The access roads are two-way, narrow, steep, and rutted, so an AWD vehicle or truck with spares is recommended. There are also no amenities, so campers should bring all of their own supplies, including food, water, tables, and garbage bags. The stars are amazing here due to the lack of light pollution, and visitors can also explore the canyons and witness the Painted Hills and John Day River in the backdrop. The river is a few hundred yards away, and the single vault toilet is close by. Campfires are only allowed in a metal pit, and visitors should be aware of the potential for flash flooding in certain seasons. It is a great spot to get away from it all, with stunning scenery and plenty of space.

From The Campground

Primitive camping opportunities exist within the Priest Hole area along the John Day Wild and Scenic River. Please help take care of this beautiful resource by using the restroom facilities, by packing out garbage including organics such as fruit peelings and nutshells, and by only driving and camping along open roads. A fire pan is required if having a campfire when fires are allowed in order keep the area pristine and attractive to others.
