What others are saying about this campground
Deschutes State Park is a great spot for camping and outdoor activities along the Deschutes River. With plenty of trees and a cool breeze from the water, the day use area is a great escape from the heat. The campground is fairly small and offers plenty of room for fly fishing in the shallow part of the river. The campground is close to the interstate and train tracks, but the lovely campground and gorgeous river make up for the noise. There is a 24 mile gravel path from the campground with dispersed camping and a great Oregon Trail Interpretive display. The campground is well located, clean, and spacious with great access to the river for swimming. There are also trails along the Deschutes River and plenty of birds, geese, and goslings. The campground is close to the mouth of the Deschutes River into the Columbia and is a great location for somebody heading south from Washington into Oregon and beyond on 97. The campground is open to vehicles up to 24 ft and has clean vault toilets, potable water, picnic tables, and fire rings. The trains can be heard at night, but the sunsets are amazing and the kids had a great time walking among the rocks, building sand castles, and swimming down the rapids. This is a great spot to stay to explore the Columbia River Gorge area.

From The Campground
Deschutes River State Recreation Area is a year-round campground and day-use area located in Oregon. The campground is situated between two major rail lines, so the sound of passing trains and their horns is common. For light sleepers, it is recommended to bring a set of earplugs. The Lower Deschutes River Corridor has a rich cultural history, providing sustenance for thousands of years to the Warm Springs and Wasco people moving seasonally through the area. Members of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs retain their fishing rights and can be seen dip net fishing the traditional way on platforms over the river just below Sherars Falls. The campground offers amenities such as fire rings, and smoking is allowed in vehicles, in a boat on the water, or while standing in the water. The park also offers activities such as fishing, horseback riding, and backcountry camping. Visitors can purchase boater passes for the Deschutes River or the Columbia River. The park requires a special use permit for events that will have over 50 people, use a public address system, sell goods or services, limit public access, commercial filming, and anything that requires park staff to be present.
