GenieSummary

This campground is the perfect destination for those looking for a natural setting with great hiking and fishing opportunities. With 43+ miles of trails, 10 miles to the bike trailhead in White Haven, and 25 mile rail trail for bikes and foot travel at Lehigh Gorge State Park, there is plenty to explore. The campground is located about 2 mi past the park office on the right, and has a large loop with an open field so the kids don’t have to worry about vehicles pulling out. The roads have hills, descents, curves, and one blind corner that could be exciting. Make sure to pull into the Visitor Center on the right entrance driveway to check in PRIOR to heading toward the campground. There are no modern restrooms facilities at this location, no showers, only a vault type toilet, that is unheated and not maintained in a clean status. There are a limited number of electric sites and modern restrooms with showers. There are also 20 or so pet sites located in the rustic loop, but they all back up onto main route #534 which is a rather well traveled and noisy roadway. The store is well stocked, but the people at the check in booth were not very helpful in describing the campground and what is available to campers. About $100 with licensees, trout stamps, and launch fees for our 2 kayaks for the 3 days we had to play. The only downfall is all the full hookup that allow pets back up onto a main road where the cars can be rather noisy. Dont miss the Shades of Death trail - Not as difficult as it sounds, but following a stream and rock formations for a mile and a half. There is a 10% grade down to the park on the main entrance, so if steep hills are an issue for you, consider coming in the back way.

From The Campground

Hickory Run State Park is a natural wonderland with diverse habitats and forest types, extensive wild areas, and unique geological formations. The park features three state park natural areas, one of which is also a National Natural Landmark. The park has two lakes, natural and man-made waterfalls, and remote wetlands. Visitors can enjoy hiking, sledding, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, ice skating, and snowmobiling in the winter season. The park also offers environmental education programs, guided walks, and presentations on the natural and historical resources for school groups, scouts, civic organizations, and the general public.
