What others are saying about this campground
Once relocated, they cover the nests with a special netting that the babies can get out of, but that prevents the deer and racoon from digging them up and eating them. Hunting Island is a tropical paradise located close to the ocean with a variety of amenities for visitors to enjoy. The campground is lined with spikey palmetto trees, towering long leaf pines, and live oak dripping with Spanish moss. There are biking and walking trails, a store, bathrooms with showers, WiFi, fire rings with grills, picnic tables, and comfortable temperatures in February. The beach is great for stargazing and there is abundant wildlife including deer, raccoons, opossums, squirrels, and loggerhead turtles. The sites can vary in firmness, and there is a lot of Poison Ivy in the area. There is also a Nature Center, trails, boardwalks, and a lighthouse on the other side of the park. The park generates a lot of revenue for South Carolina, but funds are withheld to bring the facilities up to date and renourish the beach.

From The Campground

Hunting Island State Park is South Carolina’s most popular state park, attracting over a million visitors annually. The park features five miles of pristine beaches, thousands of acres of marsh and maritime forest, a saltwater lagoon, and ocean inlet. Visitors can climb the historic Hunting Island lighthouse, built in 1859 and rebuilt in 1875 after it was destroyed during the Civil War. The park offers 100 campsites with water and electrical hookups, shower and restroom facilities, beach walkways, and a playground. Pets are allowed in most outdoor areas provided they are kept under physical restraint or on a leash not longer than six feet. The park also offers picnic shelters, a nature center, and a pier for fishing or strolling.
