What others are saying about this campground
Custer State Park is a beautiful and centrally located campground with spacious paved sites surrounded by grass and lots of trees. Its the farthest east, at the head of the Wildlife Loop, and close to scenic drive to Mount Rushmore. You can access many of the trails, scenic highways and the Wildlife Loop to see all types of animals, even the Bison! Wildlife Loop does not disappoint with over 1,000 roaming buffalo, elk, deer, big horn sheep, pronghorns, wild turkeys and the popular friendly burros. There is a scenic hiking/biking trail that runs along the creek connecting the Game Lodge and Grace Coolidge campgrounds, and a secondary dump station which is much larger and easier to access just up the road from the Game Lodge campground. The campground is off Hwy 16A, and you can walk to the visitors center across the street, fish in the creek that borders the campground, take the paved hike and bike trail to the Game Lodge, or just stay put and watch the buffalo that grazed on the bordering open space each evening. Mount Rushmore and Wind Cave NP are both less than an hour away so this makes a good base for travel, and the campgrounds at Custer are the only SD state park campsites you can reserve 1 year in advance. Programs and movies most evenings in the campground all summer, and the historic game lodge is close by for dinner or drinks.
