Elk Mountain Campground in Hot Springs, SD is a smaller campground with a tent-only section that has a reasonable amount of space between the sites. There is plenty of water available and the restroom, although needing an update, is not too far away. The sites closest to the entrance lack shade. However, the camp hosts are great and warn campers about upcoming weather events. Elk Mountain is a lovely and underrated park. The ranger staff is friendly, and the peaceful campground is within walking distance to the Wind Cave Visitor Center. With nightly ranger talks at the amphitheater, its a great spot to relax after a day of exploring.

From The Campground

Elk Mountain Campground, located in Wind Cave National Park, offers unique opportunities to view the diverse flora and fauna of the southern Black Hills. The campground straddles the edge of a ponderosa pine forest and open prairie, and campsites are available in both forested and open environments. Backcountry or dispersed camping is allowed in the northern part of the park with a free permit. The campground offers basic amenities and hosts ranger-led programs at the Elk Mountain Campground Amphitheater.
