What others are saying about this campground
Meeman Shelby Forest is a beautiful, wooded camping area. The park rangers are quite friendly and helpful, ready to help out in any situation. A winter storm did cause a temporary loss of power and a blocked road, but the staff cleared both in good time. You wont find much cell service within the campground, but the visitor center offers free Wi-Fi and a couple of bars of cell service. Bring your own bike or car to get to the disc golf course, fishing area, and visitor center, as they are not within walking distance. Its a good idea to use Site12 as your starting point for the nature trail. Driving to the north takes you to the Mississippi River, which offers an amazing view. The roads are narrow but not busy. While we were there, the water levels were low, which created a rare sand bar. We found the general store to be well-stocked and selling tasty burgers and whoopie pies. If youre a fan of persimmons, now is the time to visit. They were dropped all over our campsite, and we found them everywhere. Although we had planned to stay a week, we spent just one night at Meeman Shelby Forest. If youre hoping for cell service, be warned that its a wooded area that gets poor coverage. The sites, while not large, are nestled in a peaceful and quiet atmosphere. While there are some mosquitoes, the trails are clear and marked, and the lake is lovely. The cabins, though we didnt stay in them, looked good, and the staff was hospitable and welcoming.
