What others are saying about this campground
Cottonwood Campground is a remote and peaceful campground situated in the western corner of Big Bend National Park. It is conveniently located between three main attractions in the park: the Castolon Historic District, the spectacular Santa Elena Canyon, and the scenic Ross Maxwell Drive. The campground features 21 individual sites and one group site, all equipped with bear boxes. It is a dry camping area with no hook-ups or generators permitted. Potable water is available on the site but there are no dump stations or laundry services. However, trash is collected all year round, and food storage lockers are available. Although the sites are somewhat close together, they are still roomy, and the pit toilets are exceptionally clean. The park hosts and employees are very friendly and helpful, often providing valuable advice and recommendations to campers. The campground is frequented by birdwatchers due to the surrounding natural areas. While Cottonwood Campground is not particularly luxurious or flashy, its a great place to stay if you need a base to explore the west side of Big Bend. Its an area untouched by light pollution, making it an excellent place for stargazing, and one guest even had an enjoyable experience viewing the stars through a telescope set up by a fellow camper. Keep in mind that the campground is one of the lower elevation points in the park and can get quite hot in spring and summer, with temperatures easily exceeding 100F in the afternoons. Therefore, its best not to visit the area between May and September, and instead opt for Chisos Basin Campground, where the temperatures are lower.
