Government Canyon State Natural Area is a great place to visit for those who want to experience nature without having to drive too far. It is conveniently located near San Antonio, TX and is open Friday-Monday with camping only Friday and Saturday night. The campsites are all walk-in and vary in size, but all have fire rings, a place to hang trash, and a storage cupboard. There are water spigots at the top of each trail and two composting toilets. The most popular trail is the Joe Johnston Route, which features dinosaur tracks. The park also offers a variety of trails for exploring above or below the canyon, seeing the old 1880’s period Zizelman House and locating a few of the notable dinosaur tracks. There are two bathrooms (both composting), and one trough-like sink. The visitor center is very nice and modern and they often host ranger hikes leading from the center. There is also a group shelter that can be rented for weddings or parties. Alcohol is not allowed, but no one checks your camp so don’t be rude and you can drink. Make sure to plan for the weather as all the trails close if they are wet and beware of trail closures when it rains.

The park offers a variety of activities for visitors of all ages, including hiking, camping, and wildlife viewing. The park also offers educational programs for students and families, as well as a Junior Ranger program for kids. Nearby attractions include the Alamo, San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, and Sea World.
