What others are saying about this campground
Lake Somerville State Park is a great getaway for families and outdoor enthusiasts alike. The lake is fairly warm, with a large amount of bass, huge gar, croppy, and catfish. The park offers both RV and tent sites with plenty of trails that are mowed down and well taken care of. The park is quite and peaceful, with an easy lake swimming area. Although the park has been wrought with flooding and hogs, the trail system is expansive and there are numerous trails within the park as well as the Trailway for long hikes and mountain biking. The sites are well spaced and offer fairly level pads with tables, fire rings, 30/50 amp electrical, and water. There is no covered table, but all usable spots have concrete pads for tables. The park is still recovering from Hurricane Harvey, but dont let that stop you from visiting. There is a good amount of wildlife, and the equestrian area is restored and back in business. The Birch Creek and Nails Creek sections are visible across the lake from each other, but there is a long drive (15 minutes in a vehicle around the lake) to get between them. There is a small meandering river near the campsite, but be careful as its easy to get turned around. The campsite includes the Texas Parks and Wildlife amenities, friendly staff, clean restrooms, well maintained campsites, and nature. There is active wildlife at night with coyote hunts making a good bit of commotion. The lake is quite low this year, but still enjoyable on the Birch Creek Side. The price includes a 50% discount on the second night with a Texas State Parks Card. There are fire ants present, but the Ranger addressed them and they were gone within a day. The gravel site is sloped, but you can compensate with blocks and the leveling jacks on your rig. The Camp Hosts are very helpful and do more than expected to make your stay comfortable. There is also a trail leading from the site to the water, making it a great spot for kayaking. The park does not have a gate, but does have a dump station for each camping loop. There are Munzees and Geocaches here, as well as a group pavilion/kitchen and two group shelters. There is also a boat ramp and fishing jetty/pier, though it is currently closed. The park is better for winter camping, and there are plenty of birds, deer, raccoons, and eagles in the area. The spot is spacious and includes a ground fire-ring with grilling grate, picnic table, and lantern hook. There is also T-Mobile access at this site, so you can hotspot to your TV. The soil is sandy, so the wet shoreline wont get your shoes too muddy.
