What others are saying about this campground
Andy Bowie County Park is a great public camping facility located on South Padre Island. Its just a short walk away from the beach and across the street from a popular bird watching center and sea turtle rescue facility. The park has some beautifully restored sand dunes and the beach is mostly unoccupied during the weekdays, making it a great spot for a quick beach walk or a swim. The camping sites are adjacent to each other with no privacy or shade, so its best for travelers or folks who love the beach. The park also has full hookups, bathrooms with showers, trash cans, and a parking lot. However, the bathrooms are chained closed at 5:30 pm and not reopened until 7:30-8 ish, and only one of three showers worked with only cold water. The septic system was not built to handle the volume, so if you leave your septic uncapped it will surely overflow when someone down the row dumps. You can purchase a thirty day pass for $25.00 that allows you to park right on the beach a few miles up the road at Edwin King Atwood park. The park is nothing special other than its proximity to the beach, but it does have friendly staff, good cell and internet connectivity, and the beach access road is hard packed sand. The park also has a childrens play area, but it was closed and looked to be in disrepair. The driveway into the park is sharp and with a big rig your tires will rub the curb. The park workers clean the beach daily of any sea weed that washes up. Its a great spot for a beach getaway, but its not the place for amenities like pools, playgrounds, or potluck dinners.
