James River State Park is a great place to get away from it all and enjoy the outdoors. Nestled in the middle of nowhere off of narrow Virginia secondary roads, the park offers an amazing view of the area from an elevated platform that can be accessed by hike, bike, or wagon ride. Campers can rent a kayak or canoe from the on-site livery, and a shuttle service is available from one end of the park to the other. The park also features a mile-long jogging trail, small rock climbing areas, and access to swim in the James River. Camping on the river edge is peaceful and convenient for those who want to drop their own tube in and float. The Red Oak campground offers spacious sites, some pull-throughs, and good shade. There are power and water hookups, and plenty of wooded space between sites. The bathhouse is modern and includes womens and mens restrooms, 4 showers including one handicap accessible, and a laundry area. There is also a fantastic visitor center, and an outdoor park/adventure zone for the kiddos. Cell service is limited, but there is wi-fi available at the visitor center. There are plenty of trails and in-season activities, including boat and tube rentals down by the river. Fishing, kayaking, and boating are also popular activities. Laundry facilities are centrally located with very reasonable prices and clean, well maintained equipment.
