GenieSummary

Machicomoco State Park is the perfect destination for outdoor lovers looking for a serene and peaceful getaway. Located 15 minutes North of the Coleman Bridge in Gloucester, the park offers a variety of activities including trails, a car-top boat launch, and tons of information on the Native American tribes of the area. The campground features large and level gravel sites with plenty of room between neighbors, picnic tables, and large fire pits with grill grates. There are also individual gender neutral bathrooms and shower rooms, a gift shop with souvenirs, and a paved trail alongside the park road that can be used to access the water. Cellphone service is good inside the park, and there are several shopping and restaurant options 10-15 minutes away. Despite the lack of shade canopy, the sites are in great condition and the bathrooms and showers are immaculately clean. Machicomoco State Park is a great option for spring and fall camping season, when summer heat has ended, for only $35 per night.

From The Campground

Timberneck State Park Campground offers site-specific reservations for all of its campsites, which are available from the first Friday in March to the first Monday in December. The campground has a bathhouse with restrooms and hot showers, and all sites have fire-rings, picnic tables, and lantern holders. Tents must fit on the 20’ by 20' tent pad, and outlets accept 20, 30, and 50-amp current. The campground is surrounded by small gravel/pebbles and has a quiet time from 10 p.m. through 8 a.m. Campfires are allowed only in the designated area. The park has a 3.3 mile paved foot/bicycle trail, a footpath of gravel, oyster shells, and mown grass, and a natural trail that runs 2.4 miles from the interpretive area, through the car-top kayak launch, and near the campgrounds at the trailhead parking lot. Fishing is only permitted at the floating slips located on Timberneck Creek, and a valid Virginia saltwater license is required from the Virginia Department of Marine Resources. The park has two large picnic shelters, both of which are located in the interpretive area, and each has picnic tables and a charcoal grill.
