What others are saying
Stone Cliff Campground is a hidden gem tucked away by the river past Thurmond. It is a bit of a drive to get to, but worth it for the seclusion and beauty of the area. There are several campsites available, some right on the river and some set back closer to the trail. The campsites are level, and the area is not too muddy even in the rain. There are trash cans, a picnic area, and plenty of parking. There are also plenty of trails nearby for hiking and climbing, as well as swimming and fishing in the river. The bathrooms are a pit latrine, so they are private but not necessarily clean or comfortable. There is also a lot of traffic in and out of the campground, and trains pass by every few hours. The campground is also close to the abandoned town of Thurmond and the New River Gorge. The campground is free and there are fire rings near the water. However, there is a lot of broken glass on the beach and the bathrooms need to be cleaned.
